Biography of Leon Nikolayevich Shishkov

Leon N. Shishkov (23.02 (07.03) .1830 – 31.12.1908 (13.01.1909)), Russian chemist. Graduated from the Mikhailovsky Artillery School in St. Petersburg (in 1851). He taught there as well. Professor Mikhailovsky Artillery Academy (since 1860), which organized a model for the time a chemical laboratory (1861). In 1865, retired, lived in the village and continued his studies there. Major works are devoted to the chemistry of explosives. He studied physics and chemistry of combustion of black powder, the composition and structure of rattlesnake acid and its salts (fulminate). The first synthesized and described a number of nitro compounds: tetranitromethane, trinitromethane (nitroform), etc.
